BROKEN TELEPHONE

This project was designed bAdi Kafri and Dorit Provizor for Jerusalem design week 2023.

The hamsa is an iconic, symbolic object, known in every Israeli household. It embodies a long-standing tradition and holds great cultural significance as a means of protection from the evil eye. But what happens to this symbolic representation when its definition or form are distorted? “Out of Context" shows what happens when the multi-stage process of conveying a message gradually gets disrupted as the object and its context diverge farther and farther from their starting points. Ultimately, these accruing distortions result in the original message becoming unrecognizable, much like in a game of "Chinese whispers.” The project shows how easily information can be distorted in human communication, highlighting the profound repercussions of inaccurate rumors.
